Gambling in Victoria

Community attitudes survey 2023: What do parents think about gambling?

More than three in four parents (78 per cent) of children aged 12 to 17 years told us they were concerned about the way gambling has been normalised and the effect this may have on how much their child gambles when they become an adult. More than half of parents (53 per cent) had spoken to their children about betting. Most commonly they discussed:

  • how the chances of winning are really limited (37 per cent)
  • how addictive gambling can be (36 per cent)
  • that all types of gambling can be harmful if you’re not careful, even ones that seem relatively innocent (28 per cent).

Among parents surveyed, half strongly agreed that their child/ren are exposed to too much gambling advertising and just under four in ten (38 per cent) strongly agreed they were worried that their child/ren think sports betting is acceptable behaviour.
