Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal affirms VCGLR decision to refuse 40 pokies at Commercial Hotel in South Morang
On 21 December 2017, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) affirmed the decision by the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR) to refuse an application to install 40 pokies at the Commercial Hotel in South Morang.
The appeal was lodged by the applicant, Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group Pty Ltd (ALH).
Background
In November 2016, the VCGLR heard an application from ALH to install 40 pokies at the Commercial Hotel in the City of Whittlesea.
The City of Whittlesea opposed the application and appeared at the VCGLR hearing.
On 8 December 2016, the VCGLR refused the application, providing its written reasons for decision on 12 December 2016. The VCGLR determined there would be a net negative social and economic impact on the wellbeing of the Whittlesea community if the application was approved.
