Gambling ads to be banned near schools, roads and public transport

The Minister for Gaming and Liquor Regulation, Marlene Kairouz, has announced new laws that will ban betting advertising on roads, public transport, and within 150 metres of all Victorian schools.

The new laws will apply to all static betting advertising, including outdoor billboards, on public transport, roads and associated infrastructure like stations, bridges, noise walls and embankments.

The changes follow public consultation undertaken in September 2016, which sought industry and community views on the proposals.

New laws will also be introduced to enable the Minister to ban or impose conditions on exotic forms of wagering like 'betting on lotteries', which allow people to bet on the outcome of Australian and overseas based lotteries.

The changes will allow the Minister to prevent other forms of wagering that present a higher risk of harm to the community or create consumer protection issues. New online lotteries may still be able to operate in Victoria if they meet certain conditions.
