Australian Racing Fact Book 2017–2018 edition published

Racing Australia recently published the latest edition of the Australian Racing Fact Book. A Guide to the Racing Industry in Australia 2017–2018 outlines the key results and statistics from the Australian thoroughbred sector. The fact book includes wagering turnover on thoroughbred racing, greyhound racing, harness racing and sports betting.

Key findings include:

Australia

  • Wagering turnover in Australia was $35.965 billion (an increase of $3.097 billion or 9 per cent from 2016–2017). More than 50 per cent of this amount was bet with Northern Territory bookmakers.
  • Thoroughbred wagering turnover in Australia was $19.554 billion (an increase of $1.491 billion or 8 per cent from 2016–2017). Almost 50 per cent of this amount was bet with Northern Territory bookmakers.
  • Sports betting turnover in Australia was $11.230 billion (an increase of $1.564 billion or 16 per cent from 2016–2017). More than 80 per cent of this amount was bet with Northern Territory bookmakers.

Victoria

  • Thoroughbred wagering turnover in Victoria at TABs was $2.910 billion (an increase of $70 million or 2 per cent from 2016–2017).
  • Greyhound racing turnover in Victoria at TABs was $932.35 million (an increase of $25 million or 3 per cent from 2016–2017).
  • Harness racing turnover in Victoria at TABs was $493.32 million (a decrease of $5 million or 1 per cent from 2016–2017).
  • Sports betting turnover in Victoria at TABs was $639.53 million (an increase of $34 million or 6 per cent from 2016–2017).
