The Victorian gambling study: technical report - part three

A series of secondary analyses were undertaken from The Victorian Gambling Study- A longitudinal study of gambling and health 2008-2012 (The Victorian Gambling Study). This paper is the third of a series of technical reports. The focus of this paper is on the interplay between social determinants, trauma and life events, social capital, and the level of gambling problems (PGSI score) in gamblers. Non-gamblers were excluded from the analysis. The purpose was to investigate a range of possible determinants (for example – trauma in life and upbringing, stressful life events, social capital and sociodemographics) to indicate which showed the strongest association with levels of gambling problems.

Response to AANA wagering advertising code

The Foundation has responded to the Australian Association of National Advertisers (AANA) discussion paper on the development of a Wagering Advertising and Marketing Communication code. The proposed code would provide a robust self-regulation framework for advertising and marketing communication for licensed providers of wagering services.

Aboriginal Victorians make up about one per cent of the state’s population. In the past 12 months, a higher proportion of Victoria’s Aboriginal population (76.34 per cent) gambled compared to the non-Aboriginal population (70.06 per cent). Also, higher proportion of the Aboriginal population (8.71 per cent) developed a gambling problem compared to the non-Aboriginal population (0.72 per cent).

The top gambling activities of low-risk gamblers* were: lotto, Powerball and the pools (68.9 per cent), buying tickets in raffles, sweeps and other competitions (57.81 per cent), race betting (43.48 per cent), and gaming machines (42.43 per cent).

The Victorian prevalence study 2014 is a telephone survey of 13,554 Victorian adults who were selected randomly from the general population. There were 12,551 surveys using landlines and 1003 using mobile telephones. The study aimed to explore gambling and problem gambling in the Victorian population.
