Examining risk and protective factors for the development of gambling-related harms and problems in Victorian LGBTIQ+ communities

Limited research exists into the behaviour and perspectives of LGBTIQ+ communities in relation to gambling. This project involved two separate studies: a quantitative investigation into the relationship between LGBTIQ+ status and gambling behaviour, and a qualitative pilot investigation into how LGBTIQ+ people characterise their engagement with gambling.

People with intellectual disability and their lived experiences of gambling

Through one-on-one interviews with people with an intellectual disability, and focus groups with supporters of people with an intellectual disability, this study aims to broaden the understanding of the risks gambling may have on someone with an intellectual disability.

Lived experience of help-seeking in the presence of gambling related harms and coexisting mental health conditions

This project aimed to address two gaps in our understanding. Currently there are no evidence-based frameworks or guidance for engaging individuals with a lived experience of gambling harm in gambling harm prevention activities. Additionally, no studies have examined the help-seeking experiences of individuals who present to services with both gambling-related harms and other mental health conditions.

Gambling advertising and promotions before, during and after the initial COVID-19 lockdown and sports shutdown in Australia

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the gambling industry through the temporary suspension of almost all sports codes world-wide, and the closure of hotels, clubs, casinos and betting shops. This study sought to measure the change in gambling industry advertising and promotion strategies caused by the pandemic, and their impact on consumers.

Gambling and video games: are esports betting and skin gambling associated with greater gambling involvement and harm?

Victorian population gambling and health study 2018–2019

This report details results from a large general population survey on gambling participation, gambling problems and gambling-related harm in the state of Victoria, Australia conducted between September 2018 and January 2019.
The study is the third of its kind in Victoria. Previous studies were conducted in 2014 and 2008. The latest study differs from earlier surveys in that it includes new elements that better align the investigation with a public health approach through the consideration of gambling harm in the broader community.
The study involved a mobile phone and landline survey of 10,638 randomly selected Victorians adults.
