The Victorian prevalence study 2014 is a telephone survey of 13,554 Victorian adults who were selected randomly from the general population. There were 12,551 surveys using landlines and 1003 using mobile telephones. The study aimed to explore gambling and problem gambling in the Victorian population.

The top three gambling activities of problem gamblers* were: lotto, Powerball and the pools (67.41 per cent), gaming machines (66.58 per cent), and race betting (52.5 per cent).

Participation in gaming machines was higher than table games, race betting and sports betting across all gambling risk groups. People at a higher risk of gambling harm participated more often in gaming machines, table games, race betting and sports betting than people at a lower risk of gambling harm. These patterns are indicative only due to the small samples of moderate-risk* and problem gamblers in the study.

About one fifth (20.63 per cent) of Victorian adults reported betting on races in the previous 12 months. This included any bets at the Melbourne Cup and Spring Racing Carnival, and on TAB Trackside virtual racing, but excluded sweeps.

Aboriginal Victorians make up about one per cent of the state’s population. In the past 12 months, a higher proportion of Victoria’s Aboriginal population (76.34 per cent) gambled compared to the non-Aboriginal population (70.06 per cent). Also, higher proportion of the Aboriginal population (8.71 per cent) developed a gambling problem compared to the non-Aboriginal population (0.72 per cent).

The top three gambling activities were the same for males and females. They were: Lotto, Powerball and the Pools (males 46.31 per cent, females 47.47 per cent), raffles, sweeps and other competitions (males 35.40 per cent, females 47.54 per cent), and race betting (males 21.11 per cent, females 20.17 per cent).

Pre-commitment is a system that allows gamblers to set time or money limits and to track their play. Gaming machine players were asked whether they would use pre-commitment if it were available on the day of the survey telephone call.

People who had gambled in the past 12 months were asked to identify the activity on which they had spent the most money during that time. This was termed the highest spend gambling activity.

An estimated 5.05 per cent of Victorian adults reported betting on table games in the previous 12 months. This included games like blackjack, roulette and poker. There was no statistically significant change in adult participation in table games since 2008.

Of the Victorian adults surveyed, 16.74 per cent spent money on gaming machines in the past 12 months. This shows a significant decline in gaming machine participation from 2008, when it was 21.46 per cent.*
