Australian Racing Fact Book 2019–2020 edition published

Racing Australia recently published the latest edition of the Australian Racing Fact Book. A Guide to the Racing Industry in Australia 2019–2020 outlines the key results and statistics from the Australian thoroughbred sector. The fact book includes wagering turnover on thoroughbred racing, greyhound racing, harness racing and sports betting.

Key findings include:

Australia

  • Thoroughbred wagering turnover in Australia was $21.088 billion (an increase of $143 million or 0.7 per cent from 2018–2019). Almost 50 per cent of this amount was bet with Northern Territory bookmakers.
  • Sports betting turnover in Australia was $10.160 billion (a decrease of $2.198 billion or 18 per cent from 2018–2019). More than 80 per cent of this amount was bet with Northern Territory bookmakers.

Victoria

  • Wagering turnover in Victoria via the TAB was $4.613 billion (a decrease of $492 million or 10 per cent from 2018-2019).
  • Thoroughbred wagering turnover in Victoria via the TAB was $2.699 billion (a decrease of $200 million or 7 per cent from 2018–2019).
  • Greyhound racing turnover in Victoria via the TAB was $808.34 million (a decrease of $96 million or 11 per cent from 2018–2019).
  • Harness racing turnover in Victoria via the TAB was $386.26 million (a decrease of $62 million or 14 per cent from 2018–2019).
  • Sports betting turnover in Victoria via the TAB was $602.13 million (a decrease of $128 million or 17 per cent from 2018–2019).

Turnover is the expression used to describe the amount wagered. It is all the money bet before any winnings are paid out or losses incurred.
